The Kosyaem family has a rich history of weaving, having been engaged in the craft in Aleppo, Syria, for over 150 years, and in Urfa, Turkey, for 600 years prior. Each generation has cultivated a new weaving tradition to pass down.

Heritage

Mahmoud's generational contribution was inspired by his love for his ex-wife, whom he taught to weave. He created an accessible weaving experience for those new to the craft. With the assistance of a carpenter, Mahmoud designed and built a community loom that accommodates ten people, fostering a vibrant, community-focused creative and social atmosphere.

Community

In 2025, Mahmoud launched Sarab in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where he constructed a loom capable of hosting twenty weavers at once. This space has evolved into a vital third place for our flourishing community.
