Afterschool Tapestry Weaving
During each workshop, students will learn ancient weaving techniques passed down through generations and how to represent themselves through fiber arts. Our workshops are a community-oriented experience where Arabic textile history is incorporated into the craft.
Our Fall 2026 program runs from September 14th to December 23rd. Workshops are open for Kindergarten and Grades 1-2 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Grades 3-5.

About our program
Weaving has always been characterized by being a place for communities to connect with one another while building something with your hands.
The Kosyaem family has a rich history of weaving, having been engaged in the craft in Aleppo, Syria, for over 150 years, and in Urfa, Turkey, for 600 years prior. Each generation has cultivated a new weaving tradition to pass down.
In 2025, Mahmoud launched Sarab in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where he constructed a loom capable of hosting twenty weavers at once. This space has evolved into a vital third place for our flourishing community.
Mahmoud learned to weave as a child and his daughter, Mila Rose, is quickly becoming an experienced weaver at the age of 5.
This fall, we are excited to pass down weaving techniques and foster community building amidst K-5 students in Brooklyn.
